Ahlgren Ranch-Box Elder Bottom

Nearest Town, Winnett, Montana
1,500 acres

The Ahlgren Ranch is a true story of a transitioning Montana ranch. Extended family members originally bought the ranch 30 years ago from Montana landowners who did not have the opportunity to pass it along to family. Similarly, we bought the ranch in spring 2021, although we have been involved in the operation for many years. We are enthusiastic about the endless opportunities that this cow/calf cattle ranch has to offer, while respectful of the history of the land.

With almost 1,000 acres of ranch land to access, the Box Elder Pasture hosts great opportunities for mule deer, whitetail and pheasant hunting. Over two miles of Box Elder Creek runs through the pastureland, creating canyons and water sources for wildlife to roam about. Cottonwood trees line the bank of the year-round creek with various drainages running into it. Meanwhile, big bends in the flowing water provide great habitat for species to enjoy.

Visitors can park on the south side of the property and hike in from there. RV camping can occur in this same location, and a tent can be pitched anywhere on the ranch. Otherwise, the nearest town of Winnett, MT is just 10 miles away and has a motel and Airbnb options, including our own Airbnb: Broadway Tiny Home

There is no minimum or maximum number of days required when booking. If I am on the property during your trip I am more than happy to help retrieve the harvest.

We hope our visitors will respect the land in the same way that we do and will please leave the grounds the way they were found. We are looking forward to hosting you on the Ahlgren Ranch!

The river bottom here is an oasis for deer. I kicked up a few groups of whitetail that were bedded in the clumps of timber along the bottom. Also spotted some muleys cruising up the hillside to the north.

Beautiful property, nice extensive riparian area along the creek. Nice to hunt a property not over grazed, great cover. Watch out for the porcupines!

This appears to be very good habitat for wildlife. We saw bald eagles and deer in the short time we were there. We were hunting upland game but didn’t see any. That doesn’t mean they aren’t there. We arrived late and had to leave early so we didn’t put in the time to know either way. Charlie is a good host. I’d hunt here again for upland birds. We saw deer that might draw me back for them too.

The ranch was beautiful. We ended up having a limited time to hunt due to unforeseen circumstances. We were there for a couple of hours hunting birds. Saw plenty of deer tracks in the snow but no pheasant tracks, but we only walked a small portion so I don’t feel I can make an honest assessment of the pheasant numbers. There were plenty of pheasants along the highway. We did get into a covey of huns and made made most of the time we had. Enjoyed it very much.

All and more of my expectations were met while on the Box-Elder bottom. It is prime white-tailed deer habitat with very, very healthy deer population, while I was out hunting on Box-Elder bottom I observed many “shooter” bucks, and I am sure many more that I did not see. I would highly recommend hunting here to anybody, and with kids as well. Another plus is the pack out is very easy! I will definitely be going back!
