Turkey hunters will most likely find Merriam's in this part of the state; however, as populations fluctuacte year to year, you may find some Rios or mix of the two. Merriam's may not be pure.
This is a really unique hunt opportunity, with mountainous terrain and thousands of additional public acreage avaialble in the national forest. Wild turkeys use the mix of timber and open slopes for roosting and feeding, moving between tree cover and forage-rich openings throughout the day. The year-round spring and seasonal creek create reliable travel routes, especially in the early morning as birds leave the roost. Hunters can set up along the edge of cover or near water to intercept birds as they work through the property and surrounding forest.
Bring a ground blind or get ready to put some miles on your boots if you're wanting to run and gun!
