Located in southeastern Montana near the town of Ekalaka, Harmon Creek Cattle provides a variety of wildlife habitat from rolling prairie to Ponderosa Pine-covered hills. In addition to the contiguous deeded property, Harmon Creek Cattle is adjacent to the Ekalaka Hills of the Gallatin-Custer National Forest, which is over 18,000 acres in size. We own a small private piece of land in the heart of the forest as well. The ranch's approximately 7,500 acres is home to mule deer, whitetail deer, elk, antelope, turkeys, and upland birds. The ranch is a cow-calf and yearling operation that has been family-owned since 1963.

Our family has called this part of Montana home for a long time. Llane's grandparents homesteaded in this area. Llane's dad, Lloyd even attended the elementary school at the old school house on the ranch, which is now used by our family and other hunters for game processing.

Formed in 2000, Harmon Creek Cattle LLC was named after the intermittent stream that runs through the ranch.  The stream was named after Captain William Harmon, an officer stationed at Fort Keogh near MIles City in the 1880’s during a time of open range.  “Cap” Harmon’s cattle grazed some of the same native ranges that our cattle do today.

Lodging is available in our Opechee House, an updated 5 bedroom, 3 bathroom home built in the 1970’s. A three-day minimum stay is required for lodging use. The house is unavailable from Dec 1-April 1 due to snow conditions.

We mentioned our Ponderosa Pine-covered hills, where hunters and guests can take advantage of great trails throughout the trees. Responsible use of ATVs enables guests to access some awesome glassing spots and views along the timber rims. The main “Lion Trail” goes from the north to south end of the property. During the spring/summer months, these trails are full of Montana wildflowers: purple prairie clover, prairie cone flower, crocus, echinacea/black sampson, arnica, and more! There's berry and apple picking near the Opechee house as well.

This is an excellent hunting destination not only because of the long-standing success of past hunters over the years, but also due to our game processing facility in our old school house, which includes a hanging winch, walk-in cooler, and counter tops. The school house does not have heat or water; however, we do have a hydrant and hose outside which reaches to the winch and is great for rinsing out successful harvests. We do ask if you use the school house while staying at the house, please thoroughly clean the premises. If you plan on using the school house, please bring your own paper towels and disinfectants.

A note on our hunting packages:

We require a minimum of two days for all bookings. If you'd like to add lodging in the Opechee House to your trip, we ask that you stay a minimum of 3-nights. We also have extended packages that are set up with a minimum of two guests (discounted daily rates) for 5-7 days of hunting with lodging in the Opechee House. Please inquire with any questions and we'll do our best to accommodate you!

If you're interested in dino digs or stargazing opportunities, we offer this through the Carter County Museum here in Ekalaka. These experiences can be booked through the Museum's LandTrust listing.

Property Visited

While visiting the property I saw a couple groups of pheasants and turkeys. I also saw a lot of game sign: elk scat, rubs on trees, turkey tracks in the snow around the spring.

This was our first time to turkey hunt in Montana. After doing some research we decided to target a property in the Long Pines area. Harmon Cattle company immediately caught our attention. The property had a wide variety of game from antelope to elk and several different species of upland birds. The land owners were nice and helpful. During the trip we experienced some vehicle issues and the couple spoke with some locals on our behalf that helped us get back in the action. Llane and Sharon are excellent hosts and we would recommend this property to anyone.

Very comfortable and warm house. Good road access. Lane and Sharon were wonderful hosts! We saw a lot of deer, mostly mule deer with a few whitetails in the mix. Saw 2 large herds of antelope (but unsuccessful draw on a tag this year). Facilities in place to process the deer as well. Would return.
