Unit 1-A spans over 200,000 acres of public land and serves as the primary habitat for pronghorns in the state, making it an ideal hunting destination. The Little Missouri River runs through the heart of the unit, with the Little Missouri National Grassland stretching along both sides. The landscape features a mix of deep valleys, steep ridges, creeks, and expansive prairies, creating an optimal environment for antelope. Hunters willing to venture on foot will find even greater opportunities. It's important to familiarize yourself with your chosen hunting areas ahead of the season, as this unit includes some remote and rugged terrain.

This unit has a distinctive shape, with the southern section covering a 35-mile by 32-mile area that includes both the Little Missouri National Grassland and Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The northern section spans an 18-mile by 55-mile rectangle. The Little Missouri River serves as the dividing line between the two areas. In the southern part, numerous creeks, such as East Hay Draw Creek, flow from the river, winding through the badlands to the west. Upon crossing the river into the northern section, the landscape shifts to rolling hills, scattered badlands, and agricultural land.

Unit 10-A lies within North Dakota's primary pronghorn range, making it a top destination for antelope hunting, particularly in the southern section of the unit. The Missouri River runs west to east along the northern boundary before flowing into Lake Sakakawea at the unit's eastern edge. South of the river, public access areas are located in challenging terrain that deters many hunters. However, for those willing to put in the effort and hike through difficult areas, there is a strong chance for success. Make sure to scout ahead and identify a reliable water source, as pronghorn are often found nearby.

Unit 11-A in North Dakota offers a diverse landscape, including badlands, sandstone buttes, brushy creek and river bottoms, as well as expansive agricultural land—everything that pronghorn need to thrive. If you’re fortunate enough to draw a tag for this unit, you’re in for a treat. In the northwest corner, the coulees and sandstone buttes are interrupted by Big Muddy Creek, which carves out the fertile Curlew Valley before merging with the Heart River at the unit's center. As one of the larger hunting units in the state, Unit 11-A provides excellent opportunities for pronghorn hunting.

Unit 13-A offers a greater variety of terrain compared to many other northern North Dakota GMAs. In addition to the typical rolling hills, rocky soils, creek bottoms, and small lakes, this unit also features steep inclines and significant elevation changes. Notably, areas east of Tioga and along the White Earth River have steep hillsides where the elevation can shift by 300 feet within just a few hundred yards. Overall, 13-A has larger public-access hunting areas and more PLOTS and State Trust Lands compared to many units to the east. To increase your chances, focus on areas near water and agricultural fields, where antelope are likely to be found, and consider seeking permission to hunt on private land.

Unit 2-A encompasses the state's primary pronghorn range, offering prime conditions for large herds and a high likelihood of a successful hunt. The Little Missouri National Grassland provides ample public access for hunters. In the western part of the unit, you'll find rolling hills interspersed with productive farmland and hayfields. As you move east toward the Little Missouri River, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged, with steep, forested draws and creek bottoms near the river. The creeks branching from the Little Missouri have created flat, fertile valleys filled with trees, food sources, and water. Antelope can often be spotted grazing on the rich cropland, wheatgrass fields, creeks, and small ponds scattered throughout the area.

Unit 2-B provides excellent hunting opportunities, with the state's primary pronghorn range covering the entire area, ample public access, and diverse terrain that offers multiple hunting options. The Little Missouri River marks the western edge of the unit, where the landscape is rugged and challenging. To the east, the badlands become more isolated and remote. The grassland prairies and hayfields along the eastern boundary are key habitats for pronghorns, sustaining herds that frequent the area. Numerous creeks, pothole ponds, and small lakes provide ample water sources, attracting antelope. The creeks and draws that branch off the Little Missouri River create lush, fertile valleys that offer both food and water, drawing pronghorns into the area.

This smaller unit lies between the Little Missouri River and the Montana state line. The northern section features rolling hills and badland buttes, which quickly give way to steep, rugged draws that are often challenging to navigate by vehicle. Moving south, the terrain becomes even more difficult, with rough badland draws and creek bottoms, before opening up again to grasslands and badland ridges. While the unit offers less public land than others, it compensates with extensive PLOTS property that runs alongside the Little Missouri National Grassland, forming large, continuous parcels available for public hunting. Despite its smaller size, this unit offers abundant pronghorn populations and plenty of hunting opportunities.

This unit offers a solid mix of both private and public-access lands. It lies within North Dakota's badlands region, renowned for its rugged topography and vibrant soils. While the terrain here is generally less challenging than that of the northern units, there are still areas of rough landscape, particularly along the Little Missouri River. If you're fortunate enough to secure a tag in this unit, make sure to explore Deep Creek, which flows southward through the heart of the area. While it’s a prime spot for mule deer, pronghorns are also known to frequent the lush grasslands surrounding the river valley.

Unit 4A is bordered to the east and north by Highways 85 and 12, with the Montana and South Dakota state lines forming the western and southern boundaries. Located within the state's primary pronghorn range, this unit offers excellent hunting prospects. While the area provides prime pronghorn habitat, it is also home to active oil fields. The presence of the oil industry ensures well-maintained roads, but it also means increased truck traffic, especially on BLM lands. This added traffic can work to the hunter’s advantage, as pronghorn become accustomed to vehicles and are less likely to be spooked by the movement. The key to success in this unit is to locate the herd and then determine where they’re accessing water.

Unit 4-C is characterized by remote badlands and sandstone buttes, which gradually give way to short-grass prairies and wheatgrass pastures as you move eastward. This unit lies within North Dakota's secondary pronghorn range. While natural wetlands are scarce, small creeks and streams can be found throughout the area. Much of the private land is used for livestock grazing, with some areas dedicated to dryland grain farming. For prime pronghorn hunting, be sure to explore Alkali Creek and Spring Creek, both of which offer excellent opportunities. Additionally, the Spring Creek WMA is a worthwhile location to scout for pronghorn activity.

Unit 5-A offers some of North Dakota’s most varied terrain, including the state's highest point, and provides excellent habitat for pronghorn. As part of North Dakota’s secondary pronghorn range, the unit is well-suited for antelope, with abundant crops and water sources that keep the herds in the area. It's essential to scout the unit before the season starts and, if planning to hunt on private land, reach out to landowners early for permission. Alternatively, there are plenty of PLOTS properties and State Trust Lands available for public hunting.

Unit 6-A lies within North Dakota's secondary pronghorn range and spans nearly 90 miles between Highway 8 and Lake Oahe. Both residents and non-residents are permitted to hunt pronghorn in this unit, including on the Standing Rock Reservation. However, because hunting on the reservation is regulated by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Game and Fish Department, rather than North Dakota’s Game and Fish agency, hunters will need a tribal license, and some regulations may differ. The Cannonball River runs through the northern part of the unit, while Cedar Creek flows through the southern portion. Both waterways create fertile cottonwood valleys and pass through public access areas, making them prime spots for pronghorn to find water.

Unit 7-A is located within North Dakota’s secondary pronghorn range, but its western edge borders the state’s primary range, making it a prime area for antelope, particularly in the western part of the unit. The terrain is diverse, featuring badlands, sandstone buttes, brushy creek and river bottoms, along with a significant amount of agricultural land. The Heart River flows eastward from the far northwest corner near Belfield, running along the northern edge of the unit, creating an excellent water source for pronghorn. The Cannonball River also flows east through the southern portion of the unit. With a mix of public and private land, it’s worth reaching out to landowners for access to prime hunting areas.

Unit 8-A is dominated by a variety of features, including sandstone buttes, creeks, ponds, sloughs, ridges, and livestock pastures. While it's part of the state’s secondary pronghorn range, the western edge of the unit is only a few miles from the primary range, enhancing its appeal for antelope. The rugged, often sparse landscape further contributes to making this area a prime hotspot for pronghorn, particularly along the western side. Locating their watering spots and setting up nearby is key to success. This unit has seen strong success rates in recent years.

Unit 9-A offers fantastic hunting opportunities for antelope, with plenty of quality ground to explore if you’re fortunate enough to draw a tag. The western portion of the unit is characterized by rugged badlands, while the rest of the unit includes several areas with public access, giving hunters a variety of places to hunt. Antelope can be found throughout the unit, though most herds tend to concentrate around the Little Missouri River valley and the Little Missouri National Grassland. With a strong population of antelope and good trophy potential, this unit presents excellent opportunities. The main challenge for hunters will be securing access to private land, but public lands still offer solid hunting prospects.

If you’ve drawn a tag in Unit 9-C, you’ll have access to a variety of State Trust Lands and PLOTS properties to hunt. The northern part of the unit, particularly the northwest corner, features very rugged terrain with numerous small draws and limited marked roads. While it’s a great hunting unit overall, the public access areas tend to be smaller and more scattered. Unit 9-C includes a stretch of the Little Missouri River and extends eastward along Lake Sakakawea for over 30 miles to Red Butte Bay, with its southern boundary reaching into the badlands. Additionally, it’s worth exploring the possibility of obtaining access to private land in this unit for more hunting options.
