Crow Hunting in South Mississippi: A Unique Outdoor Adventureat A&W Christmas Tree Farm and Hidden Island Vineyard
Crow hunting in South Mississippi is a thrilling and challenging pursuit that attracts hunters from all over. Known for their intelligence and wariness, crows present a unique challenge that requires skill, patience, and a deep understanding of their behavior.
The Appeal of Crow Hunting
Crow hunting is not just about the hunt; it’s about the experience. The dense forests, open fields, and diverse landscapes of South Mississippi provide the perfect backdrop for this activity. The region’s mild climate and long hunting season, typically from November 1st to February 28th1, offer ample opportunities for hunters to engage in this exciting sport.
Strategies and Techniques
There are two main strategies for hunting crows: the run-and-gun approach and feeding-area hunting2.
Run-and-Gun Approach: This method involves moving from one location to another, using aggressive calling to provoke an emotional response from the crows. Hunters often use motion decoys that mimic a crippled crow to attract the birds within shooting range2.
Feeding-Area Hunting: Similar to inland duck hunting, this method involves setting up a blind near a food source, such as a grain field or pecan orchard. Decoys and friendly calls are used to lure the crows into the area2.
Essential Gear
Successful crow hunting requires the right gear. Hunters typically use shotguns with non-toxic shot, realistic decoys, and electronic or handheld calls to mimic crow vocalizations1. Full camouflage is essential to blend into the surroundings and avoid detection by these keen-eyed birds2.
Legal Considerations
It’s important to follow all hunting regulations set by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks. Crows are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, so hunters must adhere to specific rules regarding hunting methods and seasons. Always check the latest regulations before heading out.
The Thrill of the Hunt
Crow hunting in South Mississippi is more than just a pastime; it’s a test of skill and strategy. Whether you’re a seasoned hunter or a newcomer, the challenge of outsmarting these intelligent birds makes for an unforgettable outdoor adventure.

I grew up on a 200 acre farm in south Mississippi in the 50s and 60s. I still live on a portion of that farm today. Hunting camping and fishing was a big part of my life back then. My dad would host dove shoots every fall after the corn and soybean crops were harvested. My brother and I along with some cousins would spend our summers fishing and swimming on a creek that cut across a corner of the farm.
