The Black Ranch is a family-owned ranch that has proudly been in operation since before Montana became a state in 1889.
Reeseplace is our upper portion of the ranch and consists of 2,300 acres that sit right at the gates of the Gallatin Canyon. Guests can look forward to stunning views of the Gallatin Valley, Spanish Peaks, and Bridger Mountain Range. The western border of the property features a 3/4 mile stretch of the Gallatin River that is sure to give any angler or kayaker a fantastic experience. Over the years, sportsmen have enjoyed a quintessential Montana hunting experience on the acreage. With that said, the property also sits adjacent to over half a million acres of the Gallatin National Forest making the opportunity to harvest big game endless!
While we are not offering lodging at this time, guests are invited to camp at one of the many campsites on the property or make the short commute to and from Bozeman (20 minutes) or Big Sky (35 minutes).

5.0My nephew and I had a great day fishing on Bayard's property! The Gallatin fished great in the canyon but we also caught fish in the canal. Thanks, Bayard!

The property was as beautiful as I anticipated. The weather was dreary, but that made the terrain less daunting. I thoroughly enjoyed the hunt, encountered the targeted game and hope to hunt the property again in the future. Bayard provided all of the needed information about the property and made access very easy.
Reviewed by Guest on May 2024 This property is incredibly beautiful as the pictures suggest! Although I didn't find any sheds (I knew I was early), I saw a big herd of elk with a nice bull. I also jumped 3 moose (bull, cow, and calf) during my hike. Bayard couldn't have been more responsive or accommodating! I had an awesome experience and would love to come back.
Reviewed by Guest on February 2024Great camping spot. Bayard even came and dug us a fire pit. Good fishing in the canal. Plenty of room to park a large camper/multiple campers. Will be back again
Reviewed by Guest on September 2023We had two spare days on our RV travels through the Bozeman area and wanted to try our hand at fly fishing. We booked this spot with that in mind. Bayard met us at the gate and showed us to where we could camp and fish. He was extremely nice and helpful. It as awesome to learn about his family's history on the ranch as they settled it before Montana was a state. You could tell he really loves it. The property was just minutes out of Bozeman and is beautiful. It also has great access to the Gallatin River. We had a great stay and fully reccomend!

Four friends came out to hunt turkey on the Black Ranch Reese Place, and we had a great time. Although an unexpected blizzard (over a foot of snow is a blizzard to guys from Arkansas) curtailed our hunting a bit, we enjoyed the trip. The ranch is beautiful snuggled in between the Gallatin river, and the Gallatin NF. We saw large herds of elk, there were mule deer bounding about, grouse drumming, sand hill cranes, and yes, we saw a bear up close!! The turkey population was affected by the snow storm, so we did not fare well hunting. Bayard was very responsive, and gracious. Great spot with great views and easy access to Bozeman. Thanks Bayard, have a great summer! Drake

Black Ranch is beautiful. We had an incredible day fishing and bug hunting with the kids. We had a blast just hiking around and exploring Reeseplace. Bayard is an awesome host. He's very responsive and super accommodating. I'd give this trip more stars if I could and will definitely be booking another trip.

We booked our trip really early on a bad snow year. We expected we may have some troubles, and that was true. Weather made the hunting difficult, but we still had a good time. Bayard was fantastic and flexible allowing us to reschedule our second day after spring actually arrives. Crossing our fingers that happens soon!!
Reviewed by Guest on April 2023 Bayard's ranch is an incredible spot. From the first gobble we heard on the first morning to golden hour on the last evening overlooking the Gallatin Valley, we were wowed by the property. This was my first time turkey hunting and while only one member of our group was able to harvest a bird, there was never a dull moment! I could not have asked for a better spot to learn the ropes! I'd highly recommend the property to any hunter, plus anyone looking to shed hunt or hike! The wildlife is abundant on the property. We routinely saw hundreds of elk roaming and even saw a Grouse performing its drumming ritual. It'd be a pleasure to come back for another shot at a Montana Tom! Thanks Bayard!

What a fantastic property so conveniently close to Bozeman yet as remote as could be. We had a fantastic afternoon hiking and enjoying the birds and wildlife on this extraordinary tract of land. Bayard was great to deal with and we will certainly be back!
Reviewed by Guest on May 2022 Bayard is communicative, personable and manages his land impressively! I’ve admired the property from The highway for most my life and it surely sis not disappoint to get onto. You’ll not see a hounds tongue bush nor a single pocket of spurge. The property boasts an Impressive population of elk, turkey, moose and deer. I was able to lay eyes on all four species during my shed hunt. We came a little early for most the mid size bulls, but there are many in the herd!
Reviewed by Guest on March 2022Bayard is exceptional to work with. Despite having a ranch to run and lots of things on his plate day in and out, he finds time to respond to inquiries in a timely fashion. Oh and their ranch is second to none. Thanks Bayard.
