Copper Spur Ranch
Bond, Colorado, United States
1,800 Acres
Copper Spur Ranch is a true Colorado high-country escape: 1,800 acres of working cattle and sheep country near Bond, Colorado, about 45 minutes northwest of Vail and roughly an hour from Steamboat Springs. Rising from 7,600 to 10,000 feet, the ranch offers the kind of rugged mountain terrain hunters and outdoor families dream about: open parks, sagebrush rangeland, timbered draws, steep ridgelines, creek bottoms, and quiet meadows tucked far from crowds.
Yarmony Creek runs through the ranch and feeds two stocked trout ponds holding rainbow and brook trout, giving guests the chance to fish right on the property between hunts or after a day of exploring. Historic log barns, some built by the original homesteaders more than 140 years ago, still stand in the Homestead area and give the ranch an unmistakable old-Colorado feel.
What makes Copper Spur especially unique is its location. The ranch borders the 12,000-acre Radium State Wildlife Area and is surrounded on multiple sides by BLM and USFS land, opening the door to tens of thousands of acres of public ground. Copper Spur provides exclusive access from the west side into the wildlife area, making the ranch an ideal private base camp for hunters who want room to roam without giving up the comfort and security of private lodging, parking, game care, and a place to stage each day’s hunt.
This is not a canned hunt or a fenced-in experience. It is big-country Colorado hunting. The ranch itself is part of the movement corridor, and many successful hunts take place across the surrounding public land accessed directly from the property. This country has produced record-class mule deer, solid elk, moose sightings, black bear, blue grouse, turkey, bobcat, coyotes, and prairie dogs. For sportsmen who enjoy putting in the work and hunting real mountain terrain, Copper Spur offers a rare combination of private access, public-land opportunity, and true seclusion.
Copper Spur Ranch is located in GMU 15. Mule deer buck tags are by draw, bull elk tags are available over the counter(OTC), bear is OTC, and turkey is draw only. Cow elk is also draw, but private-land cow tags can offer an excellent opportunity to fill the freezer. Blue grouse are common on the property and make a great add-on for hunters looking for a mountain bird experience.
Rifle seasons are generally the strongest hunting windows here. Deer begin showing up consistently in early October, bear are active throughout archery and rifle seasons, and elk movement tends to improve later in the fall. Archery hunting is available, though elk movement on the ranch during that window can be limited compared with rifle seasons. First rifle, fourth rifle, muzzleloader, and archery seasons currently have availability this fall. Second rifle is a family hunt, so guest availability is limited to the second half of the season, Wednesday through Sunday. Third rifle is fully booked.
Guests are welcome to bring ATVs, UTVs, side-by-sides, or horses. Upon arrival, we will meet you at the ranch, help you get oriented, share recent game movement and ranch access information, and point you toward the country we have been watching.
Lodging is provided in a rustic but comfortable updated guest house that sleeps up to 10. The Homestead area includes space to hang game and process onsite, making it easy to come back to camp, take care of your harvest, and settle in for the evening. With stocked trout ponds, historic barns, big views, and zero development beyond the ranch, Copper Spur is as much a place to disconnect as it is a place to hunt.
There is no cell service on the property apart from that provided by the wifi router at the homestead area, and that is part of the appeal. Days here are spent glassing ridgelines, riding two-tracks, fishing quiet ponds, listening to coyotes in the evening, and watching the weather move across the high country. Copper Spur Ranch is remote, rugged, private, and real — a classic Colorado mountain ranch for hunters, anglers, and families looking for an authentic recreation experience.

Bio
Maria and I are the husband-and-wife team behind Copper Spur Ranch, a working cattle and sheep ranch nestled deep in Colorado's high country.
I'm a lifelong cowboy at heart. Raised in the South and educated in agriculture — Ph.D. in Animal Science — I've spent decades managing and advising ranches, riding high-country trails, and living a life rooted in hard work, open land, and good stories. I still believe in Southern hospitality, sunrise coffee, and a proper breakfast plate with bacon, eggs, and cheese grits.
Maria was born and raised in Mexico, where her love for animals and open land first blossomed on her grandparents' farm. Her life is woven with creativity, curiosity, and deep compassion. She is fluent in five languages. Her talents run wide, but her heart runs deeper. She's also a devoted learner of the human experience, constantly exploring psychology and philosophy and counseling those in need. That lifelong learning shapes the warmth, empathy, and insight she brings to every interaction. Maria engages with presence, heart, and intention.
It was Maria who first discovered Copper Spur Ranch online. She started searching after catching ranch fever during a memorable winter afternoon spent at a friend's ranch. We were both captivated by the sight of a couple hundred deer grazing as we departed. I was initially skeptical. "You don't go shopping for champagne when all you can afford is PBR," I joked.
When we first visited Copper Spur Ranch in the dead of winter, the land was buried in snow and rough around the edges. I dubbed it a "runch" — a run-down ranch. It wasn't until the spring thaw that I finally saw the vision Maria had seen all along: the stunning landscape, abundant wildlife, natural water features, and untouched beauty of the surrounding public lands. It was all there, just waiting. Now, after years of grit, grace, and shared effort, Copper Spur Ranch is evolving into the dream it was always meant to be.
Together, Maria and I have poured our hearts into this land. We care for the animals, cultivate the property, and welcome guests with honesty, warmth, and a profound love for the rhythm of the Rockies. We believe in slowing down, connecting with nature, and sharing stories that stretch long into the evening.
Copper Spur Ranch is more than a destination — it's a living reflection of our shared journey, deeply rooted in hard work, healing, hospitality, and respect for the land and all who find their way here.
