Gillespie Family Farms
Grainfield, Kansas, United States
2,012 Acres
Welcome to Gillespie Family Farms here in Gove County, Kansas!
We are located in between Grainfield and Grinnell with 2,000+ acres of dryland farmground and western Kansas plains. My family has worked this country since 1907, and I've farmed it my entire life, living in the same house I was born in. Now my youngest son farms alongside me, and between us we run a cow/calf and grain operation that produces wheat, corn, and milo.
The total acreage is comprised of 4 different tracts about 5-15 miles apart from each other, giving hunters some options on where to set up throughout the day.
The upland hunting here is built around structure that a lot of flat Kansas ground doesn't have. Draws cut through the fields and give pheasants and quail real places to loaf, feed, and hold tight when pressure is on. When the corn and milo are standing, birds use those fields hard. Walk the edges where cover meets crop, push the draws, and you'll find birds. I used to bird hunt quite a bit when I was younger, and this is the kind of ground I always wanted to be on. There are pheasants here. There are some quail too.
Mule deer work through the property as well, using the little draws and the agricultural fields as natural travel corridors and feeding areas. The acreage is probably best-suited for rifle hunters. The bowhunting will be more of a challenge with the limited tree cover.
We have about 1,875 acres in KS Unit 2 for mule deer. We have another 130 acres north of the GMU boundary in KS Unit 1 that Resident hunters can use during their hunt. The 130 acres isn't enough to reasonably offer to nonresident hunters with a Unit 1 tag.
Dove hunting is also available. A few small creeks, livestock tanks, and ponds are scattered across the property, and those water sources pull birds and deer alike, especially during dry stretches. With I-70 within a few miles, getting here from Colby or further east along the interstate is straightforward. Grainfield is two miles out if you need fuel or a quick stop before you head to the field.
Please park on the side of the road where our parcels are, not on any neighboring roadside. And if you have a good day out here, we'd love to see your success photos.
