Hasselstrom Farms
Welcome to our Farm. At Hasselstrom Farms, we strive to raise healthy animals for your family’s dinner table. Nutrient-rich protein grown in Winchester, Idaho on our dryland farm. Our animals graze timber pasture, cover crops and field crop residues to create a flavorful meat that you will enjoy. Our animals open-range graze 95% of the year. Lambs are finished on our own farm-raised Barley and Oats.
Thank you for visiting!
At Hasselstrom Farms, we have been in no-till practice for 30 years. Focusing on soil health and plant nutrition, we found that the sheep contribute to our soil microbiome and provide weed control without the use of herbicides. The sheep are rotationally grazed around our farm and timber to provide a balanced diet for the lambs and ewes and provide, vegetation control, wildfire protection and crop residue/soil incorporation. Just this year, we have removed all synthetic fertilizer from our Wheat, Pea, Mustard, Oats and Barley production, focusing on carbon sequestration and improved nutrient-dense crops.
The Farm
Hasselstrom Farms is perched on the edge of the Camas Prairie between the Salmon and Clearwater Rivers. Winchester was once a booming logging and mill community, harvesting some of the largest yellow pine in Idaho and is now where some of the finest Barley, Wheat and Grass Hay are grown. The cutover timber soil of the Winchester area, grows nutrient-rich grasses and forbes that our sheep thrive on in the summer. By grazing the timber pastures along with rotational cover crops on our farm ground, you will find our American White Face lamb some of the mildest, yet most flavorful lamb you have tried.
Eric and Sheila, with their 3 kids, Kameron, Hunter, and Koleen, farm and once raised cattle on this ground. As the kids transitioned out of the house, Eric and Sheila transitioned into Sheep.
Our Sheep
With a family background in the wooly ovine, Sheila and her daughter started with 50 sheep. Now the farm supports 700 breeding ewes. In the summer months with lambs at their mothers' side, the numbers push to 1,700, hungry, quick-stepping, bustling woolies.
The Rambouillet ewes are sheared before lambing time each year. The wool is a fine wool that is sold to Pendleton Woolen Mill for use in their famed Pendleton Wool Shirts. The lambs are marketed in the fall. Replacement ewe lambs are chosen for the next breeding year and a handful of weathers are put on feed to fatten and bring directly to you and your family.
Lamb is a rich source of vitamins, minerals, and high-quality proteins, lamb can be an excellent component of a healthy diet.
