Holmes Ranch
Decker, Montana, United States
13,800 Acres
Elk Hunting in Montana's HD 704...
Here at Holmes Ranch, we use holistically planned and managed grazing to improve land and soil health, which has enhanced our wildlife habitat and forage, attracting and holding elk. The ranch has an extensive water system for both our livestock and the wildlife population. In addition to our water, we have a diverse mix of habitat, providing food and cover: open grasslands, sagebrush steppes, moderate canyon country, and ponderosa and juniper breaks. Part of the Powder Pine Hills Unit, HD 704 is known for its quality elk genetics.
The ranch is located just outside Decker in the southeastern part of the state, with acreage that borders the MT-WY stateline. With over 13,000 acres in Bighorn County, we're only 30 minutes from Sheridan and interstate access to I-90. Access will typically be either from the Wyoming side via Sheridan or from the north out of Busby. We are about two hours from Billings.
HD 704: This is a draw unit for bulls and cannot be hunted with a general tag.
This is a TOUGH draw for both residents and nonresidents. Hunters with 5 points have a 10% chance (resident) and 4% chance (nonresident) of drawing a tag. If you can get the tag, the ranch will not disappoint!
Lodging is available in a 3 BR/2BA house, which overlooks the ranch from a high point. The house is a modern and comfortable but presently lightly furnished residence. There are a dining table and chairs inside and a picnic table on the deck. Otherwise, guests will need to bring their own bedding, cots or sleeping pads, toiletries, bath linens, and cookware and and dining utensils. Picture camping inside a warm, dry and comfortable house. Electrical and water hookups are also available for pull-behind campers or RVs for those who prefer to bring their own rig. Cell service is spotty to unavailable across much of the property.
Stay on established roads and two-tracks. Guests are required to have a shovel in their vehicle for fire mitigation, and ATV/UTV access off established roads and two-tracks is strictly for game retrieval. All access is limited to deeded land only.
