About this Property

Hunting Preserve/Wingshooting School Hosted by Bruce and Anne Kania Joy of Hunting is both a unique pheasant hunting preserve, managed and guided by Bruce and Anne, and a wingshooting “school”, where women can take bird-hunting lessons from another woman (Anne) who is an understanding coach and skilled hunter. Joy of Hunting Pheasant Preserve: Our 340-acre property is situated on the bluffs overlooking the Yellowstone River near Shepherd, MT, where we enjoy over a mile of river frontage and grand views towards the mountains. The property is intensively managed for pheasants, with food plots, roosting areas and unplanted ground strategically linked to ensure an exciting bird hunt that is as close to wild hunting as you can get. The nesting success on our property ensures we have a steady and plentiful wild population. We supplement with released birds frequently to ensure that hunters enjoy a fast and furious hunting experience! We provide accommodations in our home, which has the quality of an intimate hunting lodge, with private quarters and separate bathrooms for a small number of guests. The lodge is situated in a park-like setting surrounded by mature trees. Our spectacular vista across the river is particularly fine with a glass of wine in hand. Our clay-target thrower is sited so guests can enjoy the view while honing their shooting skills. Our home chef prepares imaginative and delicious meals with a paleo, wild game focus. Fish Fry Lake, our 6.5-acre fishing hole, boasts a catch-rate of 1 fish per minute at peak, and guests are welcome to cast for bluegill, pumpkinseed, black crappie, northern yellow perch, smallmouth and largemouth bass when their feet are sore from hunting. You can tie into bass over six pounds on Fish Fry Lake! And you have the option of fishing from floating islands, an incredibly unique waterscape feature, or a canoe. Being next to the Yellowstone and with lots of wetlands and ponds on the property, we often enjoy excellent waterfowling, especially woodies early in the season. Geese and mallards are here throughout the season. Late season field hunts from our ground blinds can be productive, fun and comfortable. Contact us closer to the time to inquire about availability. Our preserve season runs from 1 September to 31 March but, realistically, we don’t hunt until around 12th September when the weather gets cooler for dogs. Duck and goose season follows Montana's regulations for Zone 1 of the Central Flyway. Every year there are changes but generally we have a split season that starts late Sept / early Oct for days; a 2-week break; then opens again till mid January (ducks) - late January (geese). Anne Kania’s Joy of Hunting Wingshooting School: Based at the Joy of Hunting Preserve, Anne offers coaching, primarily to women who want to learn to hunt from another woman. Anne is very easy to get along with, will go at your pace and put your comfort above all. She’s an excellent shotgunner and an experienced and avid hunter and she’s fun to be around. Anne works with beginners who have never shot a gun before through to seasoned shooters who want to tune up their hunting skills. A beginner package typically consists of an initial shotgun fitting, eye-dominance test and a few practice shots; a longer lesson where the guest moves through the different aspects of target shooting; specific drills to prepare for hunting; a dry run in the field with the focus on safe handling of the gun; and finally a full hunt over dogs. The emphasis is on skills acquisition and confidence building. For more experienced shooters, greater emphasis will be placed on shooting for the field; all aspects of safety; more about dogs; more about birds; and a full hunt. Guests can choose between short, frequent sessions or a longer stay. Two full days is recommended for overnight visitors. Costs for the beginner package: Local guests, without overnight stay: 8 hours over 3 4 days: $325 For guests staying on the property: $875 for 2 full days and 3 nights. Included in price: airport transfers, meals, lodging, clay targets, target shells, outdoor kennels. Not included: Preserve hunting licenses, bird cleaning, gun hire (if available). Group and couple discounts available.
