Unit 3E1 in North Dakota is characterized by badlands, sandstone buttes, dense creek and river bottoms, and extensive agricultural land. While it falls within the state’s secondary mule deer range, the northwest corner is just 7 miles from Theodore Roosevelt National Park, and the western boundary is only 5 miles from the primary mule deer range. This unit offers an ideal environment for mule deer, making it a prime location for hunters. If you draw a tag here, consider yourself fortunate.

Unit 3E2 is shaped by the coulees and sandstone buttes in its northwest corner, with Big Muddy Creek carving out the fertile Curlew Valley before merging with the Heart River near the center of the unit. The combination of prime cropland, lush river valleys, scattered ponds, cottonwood-lined draws, and steep, rocky canyons creates an ideal habitat for mule deer. Any area along Big Muddy Creek, Heart River, and their surrounding creeks and draws offers strong potential for a successful hunt.

This unit offers a greater diversity of terrain compared to other GMAs in northern North Dakota. In addition to the usual rolling hills, rocky soils, creek bottoms, and small lakes, it includes areas with steep inclines and significant elevation changes. Notably, the region east of Tioga and along the White Earth River features hillsides where elevation can shift by 300 feet over just a few hundred yards. While whitetail deer are more common in the area, there are still excellent opportunities for hunters targeting mule deer, and the unit supports healthy deer populations overall.

This unit is mainly used for agriculture, including both crop farming and cattle grazing. Along the Souris River, you'll find several drainages lined with dense aspen and birch forests. The area supports strong deer populations, with whitetail being more abundant, though mule deer opportunities are also present. Early mornings and mid-afternoons are prime times to observe deer moving between croplands and the river, either heading out for the day or returning to the fields in the evening.

Unit 3A3 is a sizable area with diverse terrain, much of which is private land. While there are over 400 acres of State Trust Lands and PLOTS that hold deer, gaining access to private property will likely offer the best hunting opportunities. The southwest and western parts of the unit, stretching from Kenmare to Minot, offer prime conditions for deer, with easy water access, tree cover, and high-quality croplands. These areas could be your best bet, particularly if you're aiming for a trophy buck.

This unit is located in North Dakota’s Northern Coteau region, recognized for its rolling grassy hills and rocky soils. The terrain here is often rugged and steep, offering a challenging hunt for those willing to cover the distance on foot. Notably, large mule deer bucks have been spotted and harvested south of the Missouri River within this unit.

If you’re fortunate enough to draw a tag for unit 3B2, you’ll find excellent opportunities for both mule deer. This unit lies within North Dakota’s primary mule deer range, which follows the Little Missouri River and stretches eastward along Lake Sakakawea for over 30 miles to Red Butte Bay, extending south through the Badlands. The unit offers strong deer populations and solid trophy potential. While securing access to private land may be challenging, there are still good hunting opportunities available on public lands.

This compact unit is located in the west-central part of the state, along the southern edge of the Missouri River. The creek bottoms and drainages feeding into the river create areas that are difficult to access by vehicle. The terrain along the river features rugged draws and some coulees, while the land gradually flattens into fertile farmland as you move further away from the river. Historically, this unit has one of North Dakota’s highest success rates for hunters, and recent surveys by biologists indicate a rise in deer numbers in the area.

Unit 3C offers solid deer hunting opportunities, with plenty of cover provided by deep draws and rugged terrain, making it attractive to both whitetails and mule deer. While whitetail populations are more abundant, there are still good chances for mule deer in the area. The combination of ample food, water, and quality habitat supports healthy deer herds. However, public access is limited, so it’s important to reach out to landowners early to secure permission for hunting on private properties. The secondary mule deer range primarily runs along the southwest side of the Missouri River, extending across the river toward Highway 83 and reaching north of Linton.

Unit 3D1 is dominated by sandstone buttes, creeks, ponds, sloughs, ridges, and livestock pastures. While it lies within North Dakota’s secondary mule deer range, the northwest corner of the unit is just a few miles from the primary range. The rugged, often sparse landscape makes this area a prime location for mule deer, particularly along the western edge of the unit. Don’t overlook the northwest corner, where you’ll find a section of the Little Missouri National Grassland, which can offer additional hunting opportunities.

Unit 3D2 offers excellent terrain for both whitetail and mule deer. The ridges and buttes in the northwest section provide ideal habitat for mule deer, and with the state's primary mule deer range just a few miles away, this area is a top choice if you've drawn a mule deer tag. The northern part of the unit, particularly the northwest corner, is rugged, with numerous small draws and few marked roads, creating a challenging but rewarding hunting environment. The best hunting opportunities exist if you can gain access to private land near creeks and ridges.

Unit 3F1 is one of North Dakota’s most varied landscapes, offering excellent habitat for mule deer, including the state’s highest point. The northwestern corner features a prominent ridge with a sharp 400-foot elevation gain. East of this ridge lies the Chalky Buttes badlands and Duff Gulch. About 7 miles south of Amidon, White Butte rises to 3,506 feet, making it the state’s highest peak. For those pursuing mule deer, the best hunting opportunities are found near the buttes and ridges in the northern part of the unit.

Unit 3F2 spans nearly 90 miles between Highway 8 and Lake Oahe, making it a relatively large area. The western portion of the unit includes some ridges and sandstone buttes, though much of it consists of rolling hills used for farming and livestock grazing. Heading east, you’ll encounter isolated badlands formations and additional sandstone buttes, but the majority of the unit is characterized by rolling hills and short-grass prairies. Small creeks and streams are scattered throughout, with occasional pothole ponds, though natural wetlands are rare. If you’re hunting mule deer, the best chances are found near the buttes and ridges in the northern part of the unit.

If you’re fortunate enough to draw a tag for unit 4A, you’ll find excellent opportunities for mule deer. While they are spread throughout the unit, the majority of the herds are concentrated in the Little Missouri River valley and the Little Missouri National Grassland. The area is marked by deep, narrow canyons and creek bottoms, which are densely forested. If you can find a prime spot near Theodore Roosevelt National Park and wait patiently for a deer to move from the park onto nearby huntable land, you may be in for a shot at a potential B&C trophy.

Unit 4B features rugged terrain across most of the area. The northern part is filled with coulees and draws covered in buckbrush, while the central and southeastern sections are marked by steep, rugged draws and creek bottoms. These draws often contain dense groves of deciduous trees. There are numerous secluded areas where mule deer can hide. The Little Missouri River forms the eastern boundary of the unit, while the Montana state line marks the western edge. If you can find a strategic spot near Theodore Roosevelt National Park and wait patiently, you might have the chance to bag a B&C trophy.

Unit 4C is one of the top units in North Dakota for mule deer hunting, offering plenty of public access and prime mule deer habitat, including badlands and creek bottoms. The eastern edge of the unit along Highway 85 is mostly private land, while the northern and western borders are defined by the Little Missouri River. The majority of the unit consists of Little Missouri National Grassland, providing thousands of acres of public land for hunting. To make the most of your hunt, take time to study maps, identify potential spots, and scout those areas ahead of the season. With abundant food, water, steep ridges, and deep canyons, this unit offers some of the best mule deer terrain in the state.

The northwest portion of Unit 4D is mostly flat, cultivated farmland. As you move south past Golva and Bosserman Lake, the landscape changes to more rugged badlands. The rest of the unit, on both sides of the Little Missouri River, is marked by steep, challenging terrain. Closer to the river, you’ll find rough, forested draws and creek bottoms, while moving further east and west reveals brushy, wooded draws. Throughout the unit, the bottoms of these draws are lined with dense deciduous trees. The Little Missouri River Valley south of Medora has long been a prime area for mule deer.

Unit 4E in North Dakota offers a mix of private land, public access, and PLOTS properties, making it a versatile hunting area. Located within the state’s badlands region, the unit is known for its rugged terrain and striking, colorful soils. While the overall terrain in this unit is less harsh compared to units further north, there are still plenty of buttes and draws, particularly along the Little Missouri River, that provide excellent mule deer habitat. The Little Missouri River National Grassland near Deep Creek has been a hotspot for mule deer bucks, and the grasslands around Indian Creek have yielded some impressive trophy bucks in recent years.

This unit lies within North Dakota’s badlands region, recognized for its rugged buttes and steep draws. While the terrain here is generally less harsh than in the northern units, there are still numerous forested creek bottoms and draws that support mule deer herds. However, much of this prime mule deer habitat is on private land, so depending on your desired hunting location, you may need to seek permission from landowners.
