What to Expect

Only an hour from Omaha, Lincoln, or Norfolk, Nebraska, Paul & Valerie at Maple Creek Canyon welcome you to escape the city and get lost in ancient secluded woodlands, dramatic private prairie lands, and deep canyons that are rare to find in eastern rural Nebraska.

In addition, private tours, hiking, photographers, birding groups, fire pit rentals, and retreats are available at Maple Creek Canyon. We invite you to enjoy a private native Nebraska habitat and are happy to accommodate various arrangements.

With steep canyon walls and rugged terrain making up most of the topography, my wife and I have worked hard to build trails throughout the property for visitors to easily access and enjoy all that the land has to offer. These trails trickle across the fields and along Maple Creek Canyon, offering a plethora of options for recreational activities.

With cropland surrounding the preserved land, deer are frequently drawn to the area. Meanwhile, a healthy population of gorgeous wild turkey swarm the fields and roost in the trees, offering the potential for great success in the hunting seasons. We do not have any tree stands but hunters are welcome to bring their own.

Maple Creek Canyon is a drug-free and alcohol-free zone. We hope that our visitors will care for and respect the land as much as we do and leave it the way it was found. Although we do not offer overnight lodging at this time, Schuyler is only 13 miles away, with a variety of friendly overnight lodging accommodations.

Habitat Diversity
Riparian Woodland • Deciduous Woodland • Agricultural Cropland • Wetlands • Prairie

Over 15 years ago we planted a buffer strip of native Nebraska prairie grasses, milkweeds and flowers around both sides of the winding creek for miles. By not planting corn and soybeans all the way to the creek-bank, we have: 1. prevented farm chemicals from seeping into the creek water, 2. prevented soil erosion, 3. returned the land to its natural state as it was hundreds of years ago, and 4. created a habitat for butterflies & other insects, reptiles, fish, turtles and birds. Millions of new trees are proliferating, with blue herons, owls, hawks & eagles often nesting and raising their families high in the branches of ancient trees. Riparian woodlands naturally develop in abandoned courses that the creek had followed centuries ago. All our trees are deciduous except for the cedar, pine and spruce. These trees fill their branches with habitat of lush green leaves in the summer, and transform into a metamorphic palate of color in October, only to go naked for the winter and early spring, exposing the full depth of the canyon’s dramatic bold topography. The dormant vegetation during Fall, Winter & Spring, makes passage in the woods, and down in the canyon much easier to hike. My favorite days of the entire year are usually during January & February, when the creek freezes over becomes a magnificent paved highway passage, to walk for miles through the quiet, warm and still canyon walls, soft snow on the ice exposing networks of animal tracks and trails. During the summer, children delight in wading and frolicking through the shallow water of Maple Creek, discovering animal tracks in the sand & mud, and treasures that have been washed ashore or onto sand bars.

Paul has a great place. Ive been out a couple of times and have seen numerous turkeys. Ive seen quite a few mature gobblers and numerous jakes. I had several opportunities to harvest a bird , but have not sealed the deal yet. I will be back for sure. Paul is very helpful and goes above and beyond to help you in anyway he can.

My friend and I traveled from NY to Nebraska to turkey hunt at Maple Creek. Paul was great on keeping me informed of the turkey population and what the birds tend to do in the area. Paul was also receptive to our hunting strategies and willing to give us a layout of the land. My friend and I were able to harvest two long beards and a Jake. It appears the turkeys are a young population with great potential for the next few years. Overall, my experience at Maple Creek Canyon was excellent and expectations were met.

Mark and Mason are two avid hunters who drove all the way from New York to Maple Creek Canyon, hoping to get a shot at the beautiful variety of Nebraska turkeys at Maple Creek Canyon. I gave them a complete 8 mile tour on Friday afternoon. But they didn’t want me driving in too far so as not to spook the birds. We could see several wild turkeys from a distance. Early Saturday morning these able-bodied young men quietly hiked in the dark to a remote area where the turkeys roost. At sunup, my wife and I heard 3 pops. A few minutes later I received the following message: “We are very grateful for this opportunity to hunt you’re beautiful land. The limit is three turkeys per person in Nebraska. There are definitely a lot of birds on you’re property. It was an amazing hunt. I killed two male turkeys and mason killed one. We are headed west to try to find some more to hunt.”

Good property, plenty of game, just couldn’t get a mature buck to present me an opportunity of a harvest. North property is a little difficult to get to as well as the west side of the creek. Paul was great to work with and will most likely be back.

Land Trust is bringing us a high caliber of hunting enthusiasts. Brian was our first guest for the opening weekend of deer rifle season. He also hunts archery, and I hope to see him back soon, since we are only an hour from Omaha.
