10,000 acres

The OJO Ranch is 10,000 acres of expansive, completely unobstructed Native Grassland and Rocky Gullies. The property has a huge presence of rich geology and also includes 1,000 acres of CRP.

Before our family bought the ranch, Roy Rogers is believed to have trained his famous Palominos in this area. The ranch also features a rock formation with carvings in the rock from 1886 of people passing through as they settled the West.

The ranch has been in our family for three generations, and we are very excited to share our piece of Western Kansas with you!

Property Visited

The textured grasslands have deeper holes that hold water in the mostly dry creek beds, which are spots to key in on for muleys and antelope. I've also seen scaled quail near the pens closer to the house.

The property was a large tract of land with varied terrain. A winter wheat field was located across the street on an adjacent property serving as the food source. Cody and his dad (Trig), were some of the nicest people you could meet. They both tried to help as much as possible by introducing me to a neighbor who deer hunted and the other Land Trust hunter who just completed his hunt. Syracuse was a nice little town with good restaurants and a nice clean hotel.

Hi Cody and his father were very nice.we hunted the youth season which is the first weekend in September it was very hot. We didn't have much luck we didn't see any deer I'm guessing due to the hot weather. There also were a lot of crops in the area which didn't help us out either. They have a lot of land to hunt and I would guess later seasons would be more successful. We did see a few pronghorn and one decent pronghorn buck it would have been a shooter. Also we seen a couple coyotes also.

OJO is a incredible landscape and I wish I had more time to explore all 10,000 acres but what I saw was super unique and pretty. Cody and his dad were super friendly and generous. The Ranch sits in a beautiful and under appreciated corner of the state of Kansas and its rolling hills, rocky outcroppings, incredible stars, native prairie, mammals, reptiles  and birds makes its a wonderful place to get outdoors and appreciate nature in many ways. As of spring 2022 the whole area is still in an extreme drought, so in a wetter time I’m sure we would have seen even more. We were there for birding but this would be a great place for stargazing, or anyone interested in geology or native plants as well as of course pronghorn, deer, pheasant or scaled quail hunting. For birding we found many good species especially in the trees around the house and on the perimeter of the ranch. Highlights were Scaled Quail around the cattle pens near the house, MacGillivray’s, and Northern Waterthrush at the house, Cassin’s sparrow, and tons of lark buntings in the souther portion. We also saw Bull snakes and a prairie rattle snake a few miles away from the ranch. For mammals we say coyotes, jackrabbits and deer and pronghorn scat.
