Food Plots and Natural Forage

The food plot is the location of the hunting zones. The plot is a 50-75 yd wide strip of field between two areas of woods. This year we broke this field strip into 3 sections. One is Cave-in-Rock Switchgrass to provide cover for the deer. The second section is a food plot. We tilled it and planted a food/cover mix called Buck Draw. Buck Draw is a mix of warm season tall growing forages, including grain sorghum, sunflower, Sunn Hemp, Lab Lab, winter peas, and forage soybeans, providing an excellent long season high protein food source. The last section will be turned into a fall plot with Bison Mix. Bison Fall Mix is a smorgasbord of forages providing nutrition throughout multiple seasons while enhancing soil at the same time. It is a mix of grains, brassicas, and clovers that have many different benefits during different seasons. An overseed planting will be done with Crimp-n-Grains. Crimp’N Grains is a mix consisting of winter wheat, winter grain rye and buckwheat. These plots will ensure the deer have something to forage on from summer through spring.

Ponds and Springs

There is a highwall on the property. Below the highwall is a pond. Usually this water is not as good, because it becomes stagnant. Because of this, we dug a wildlife pond that is spring fed. It is over the hill below the food plot area. The deer and wildlife use it a lot for fresh water to drink.

Woods, Draws, Shelter Belt, Grasslands, Brush, and Hills

Due to the size of this property, we have very strategically created access points to the hunting zone so as not to disturb the deer bedded on the property. Most of the neighboring property is a dense wooded "holding area". The success of our setup has been remarkable. On our property, there are dense areas, areas that provide cover and protection, there is a protected "bench" or area along the side of a hill that the deer like to bed on.

Bio

As a young married man with three beautiful children, my passion for the outdoors has been pretty much lifelong. This love for nature and a slower pace of life fuels my desire to share with others the experiences I've enjoyed.

Observing animals and birds as they go about their existence is grounding and captivates me. I enjoy shooting guns, riding four-wheelers, camping, and striving towards self-sufficiency in life's basic needs.

Its always a joy when I can take a young person hunting and help them tag their first animal!
