The A- Ranch is a small family ranching operation consisting of just over 960 acres of prime Nebraska mule deer country. Our habitat is primarily pasture and grassland with draws, several deep canyons with cedar trees, and one large tree belt with excellent access. In addition, we also farm rye and oat on parts of the ranch, and those fields have been known to be a major food source for mule deer cruising through.
We are located in the Buffalo Mule Deer Conservation Area, which requires a tag to be drawn for nonresidents to hunt either rifle or archery. Nebraska residents can bowhunt an MDCA with their normal statewide archery tag, but out-of-state residents must draw a tag to be able to hunt with firearms. No muzzleloader hunting is permitted in the Buffalo MDCA.
This Fall, we'll be offering an archery mule deer hunt and a rifle mule deer hunt. Mule deer are more prevalent than whitetail deer.
We are located in southwest Custer County, 17 miles north of Gothenburg and Interstate 80. We look forward to hosting you!

A- Ranch

Central NE Archery Mule Deer Hunt | Buffalo Unit

No November Firearm availability. We save those dates for family; however, there's still high potential for archery or muzzleloader hunters.
Our highest numbers of deer populations are usually found in the deeper canyons to the south of the Road 786, or found coming off the fields in the mornings or onto the fields in the evenings.
The rolling hills and grassy draws make our ranch a strong option for archery and muzzleloader mule deer hunters looking to glass and stalk. The ranch is part of Nebraska's Buffalo unit for Deer. We see a lot of action around our game cameras.
Whitetails are much less prevalent out here; however, you're welcome to reach out to ask if we've been seeing any. If we have, we can certainly try to accommodate a whitetail hunt for you and your group.
Tent camping is allowed on-site, and while there are no hookups for RVs, hunters are welcome to bring a generator.
Just north of Gothenburg in Custer County, Cool Ranch offers 3,000 acres of working Nebraska ranchland with excellent habitat and opportunity for a variety of hunts. This sixth-generation cow-calf and hay operation blends agricultural ground with open terrain, featuring irrigated and dryland hay fields, scattered tree strips, loam and clay canyons, and wide-open pasture. Multiple livestock tanks and ponds provide consistent water sources across the landscape, keeping game active and moving throughout the property.

Nebraska Mule Deer Hunt: Muzzleloader OR Archery | Buffalo Unit

Hunt muleys in Central Nebraska! Muzzleloader Hunting Not Permitted
Our oat and rye fields make for great food sources for deer. In addition to our rolling terrain, the ranch also features two "canyons" or draws, the Middle Canyon and the Mulberry Canyon. These are good sources of cover for deer, and we'll routinely see them moving through. The property also features multiple glassing spots.
Popup/Mobile blinds are permitted.
No hookup for RV. Too much Fire danger for campers.
The last range fire was 71,000 acres and stopped 2 miles from this location.

Located in the south-central part of the state, this unit is divided by the well-known Platte River. It features healthy deer populations, offering hunters excellent opportunities for pursuing bucks. The private lands surrounding the river primarily consist of agricultural fields, while much of the northern half is characterized by natural rolling grasslands. Securing access to private land is highly recommended in this unit.
