The Kombol Ranch is a beautiful working cattle ranch near the Big Snowy Mountains north of Roundup, MT. Our family homesteaded this ranch in 1909. The ranch is made up of rolling native prairie and vast blue sky stretching toward the Little Snowy and the Big Snowy Mountains to the west.

We're happy to offer our guest house to hunters, horseback riders, and folks who just want to get away and enjoy Montana's beautiful scenery. It's a cozy little 3-bedroom house with a living room, full kitchen, bathroom, and great woodburning stove for cold nights. The house can comfortably host 3-4 adults. The guest house also has a fenced yard for dogs and dogs are welcome in the house as well.

Our ranch is part of Block Management so if you come out here to hunt, there may be other hunters out here but by staying with us on the ranch you'll have a big leg up on other hunters who are trying to get out to the ranch before light. Instead of a 1.5-hour drive from Billings, you can wake up right on the ranch and start your hunt. We're also happy to board horses if you'd like to bring them. Horses are the best way to fully utilize the property and a lot of elk hunters see more success that way. We've got a large corral right next to the guest house.

As far as hunting goes, we've got a great antelope population which is a big draw for us and we also have a pretty large herd of elk that uses the property in the shoulder season (December - February). There's also a pretty good population of Hungarian partridge. We have LOTS of coyotes that we'd encourage you to come out and shoot as well as a prairie dog town.

Our ranch is adjacent to Lake Mason National Wildlife Refuge which adds another ~5,200acres of hunting and we're the only way to get to the southern part of it as well as giving access to a landlocked section of BLM.

Come out and stay with us for a few days and enjoy the luxury of being able to come back to the ranch after a hard day of hunting to enjoy a warm fire and the ability to cook in a full kitchen and sleep in a warm bed before getting out first thing in the morning.

I did not see any elk; however, the population in the area is extremely strong this year. Once we get some more snow in the higher country, I'm sure there will be a good-sized herd as per usual!

The place was perfect for us to base our bird hunting trip out of. Terry stopped in during his morning work to make sure everything was good with the place. Had a good time speaking with him and learning a bit about the ranch and area. Would definitely return. Awesome view of the mountains west of the ranch.

Cathy and Terry were excellent to work with and very friendly hosts. The guest house was warm, clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. The wood fire was wonderful! We even had a little cell-phone coverage (T-Mobile) which was enough to get emails and receive texts. There is no Wi-Fi available, but a ton of DVDs and videos if you had the energy to watch them. The one issue we had in the house was the tap water, and that's the reason for a 4-star rating. It had a foul smell and was unpleasant to wash dishes in, or shower in, or drink. We did not bring much bottled water with us, which I think we should have been warned to do in advance (we ate snow while hunting!). I'm sure the water wasn't harmful, just unpleasant. As far as the hunting went, I am writing this as an inexperienced elk hunter, FYI (though my husband hunted elk a lot in his younger days). We didn't plan properly for the fact that the hunting was basically on public land. And we would have greatly benefited from OnX or HuntWise to be sure of the boundaries. We had an opportunity to get close to elk late in the day but decided to wait till morning and hope they'd be still there. They were, but by morning, there were two other groups ahead of us and the elk were moving back into the timber, out of bounds, by the time we got close. We'd had a 3 1/2 mile walk in (we were advised against driving, for obvious reasons) but the hunters ahead of us came in via public access, with a shorter walk. We could have done the same, if we'd realised. Hindsight is 20/20. Another factor for elderly hunters like ourselves (!!) to consider is that there is no vehicle access to the FWS refuge which surrounds the Kombol Ranch, so you may have to drag a carcass a couple of miles to your vehicle. The property itself is magnificent, with views of mountain ranges all round. We had a glorious 2 days of scouting and getting to know the property, and learning the ropes for next time.

Cathy was so helpful in providing tips to where we would find the elk and their hospitality was fantastic. Nowhere else will you get this deal where you get to stay at the guest house and for this cheap. Can’t wait to get back.

Thank you so much for allowing us to stay on the ranch. We had an amazing time, memories I’ll never forget. We were blessed and the family will enjoy the elk we harvested ever much. The house was very nice and the history it holds is unbelievable. Thank you again for everything. We hope that we get the Privilege to visit your place again.

My husband Terry & I are running the 4th generation of the Kombol ranch which was homesteaded in 1909. We love our ranching lifestyle and are excited to share our beautiful ranch with hunters, horseback riders, and folks who just like to be out in beautiful country!
