This is a large region covering the west/central part of Montana up to the Canadian border. On the southern half of the unit, birds can be found in some of the foothills and timbered bases of mountainous terrain, along with the standard river and creek bottoms. Terrain flattens out more on the northern half of the unit, so it is wise to focus efforts in the river/creek bottoms. Sportsmen can expect to find Merriam's in this region, unless hunting on the western edge, where there is a rare chance of getting into some Easterns. This region falls under the over the counter general license, which is valid statewide for male turkey in the spring.
Montana's Region 5 covers Wheatland, Golden Valleym Musselshell, Sweet Grass, Stillwater, Carbon, and Big Horn counties in the southcentral part of the state. Turkey populations in this unit are strong and hunters will find birds in fields along timbered river/creek bottoms as well as in the timbered coulees and breaks. Along with the over the counter statewide general turkey license, sportsmen can purchase a region specific license for a male turkey in the spring.
Montana's Region 7 is very large covering Treasure, Rosebud, Garfield, Powder River, Carter, Fallon, Prairie, Dawson, Richland, Custer, and Wibaux counties in the eastcentral and southeast parts of the state. Sportsmen can expect to find Merriam's in some unique coulees and breaks, along with the more typical river/creek bottom habitat. Along with the over the counter statewide general turkey license, sportsmen can purchase a region specific license for a male turkey in the spring or an either sex turkey in the fall.
Montana residents and non-residents can purchase a turkey permit over the counter for Spring Turkey. Turkey hunters will most likely find Merriam's in Montana. Montana's general area is vast spanning from the southwest part of the state all the way up to northcentral and northeast Montana. Note: Fall Turkey Areas may be different. Please reference Montana FWP to check Fall Turkey Areas.
